Political scene: Potential leader of the opposition alliance emerges

In the capital, the largest municipality, the alliance was broadened by the participation of the PP -- together called the Reykjavikur List. While substantial differences existed between the IP and the List on the provision of nursery services and town planning, overall policy orientation differs little. Given these similarities, the elections focused -- uncharacteristically -- on the personalities of the party leaders. As such the results were a great personal victory for Ingibjorg Solrun Gisladottir, the charismatic leader of the Reykjavikur List. Ms Gisladottir's performance increases the chances of her return to national politics as the leader of the opposition.
